A dental crown meets both functional and aesthetic needs. Unlike a dental veneer, which covers only the front part of the tooth, a crown covers the entire tooth.<\/p>

The dental crown is effective in protecting a completely fractured or severely damaged tooth. The crown can also be used to hide a dental deformity. It is very useful for supporting a tooth that needs a major restoration following extensive decay. At the first appointment, the dentist will trim the defective tooth to remove the entire decayed part of the tooth. They prepare the support (the coronal preparation) that will receive the crown. Next, the dentist takes a series of dental impressions, which are then sent to a dental laboratory where a dental technician (prosthetist) will make a custom-made crown that is perfectly adapted to your mouth. A temporary crown is then placed on the tooth by the dentist while waiting to receive a final permanent crown. Provisional (or temporary) crowns have a lifespan of only a few weeks and require a certain amount of caution on the part of patients, as they can break easily.<\/p>

At the second appointment, the dentist will cement the final crown in place. The dentist makes sure that the tooth will not interfere with chewing, that it is comfortable and properly fitted to the patient’s mouth.
